How does ecodesign work?
What is ecodesign?
Eco-design involves integrating environmental protection into the design of goods and services. It is a standardized methodology referenced worldwide in ISO standards (14006, 14062). It consists of a series of actions to be taken to minimize the impact of an organization or product on the environment.
Its strength lies in a “multi-criteria” life-cycle analysis (LCA) approach, leading to a solution with the smallest possible environmental footprint.
Today, it is estimated that over 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined during the design phase. This is where eco-design comes into its own.
See eco-design as an asset, not a hindrance
Implementing an eco-design approach opens up new possibilities, and is an opportunity for the company to reap the benefits in terms of brand awareness, safety and the market.
Four types of benefits for companies:
development of new offers for new markets and new customers as a result of a more sustainable offering
securing supplies and anticipating market constraints and environmental regulations
a powerful contribution to corporate image and commitment
Increased sales and customer satisfaction.
Eco-design is a lever for reducing carbon footprints while integrating sustainable practices into content creation and distribution.
How can it be applied to the media sector?
Many types of action can be taken in this sector.
Example for digital: optimizing formats and content (compression, size reduction, less storage), more responsible design of post-broadcast content.
Example for print: work on coloring to reduce the ink coverage of solid colors, and optimization of decorative elements such as typography, can significantly reduce inking rates (up to 40 pt) and therefore ink consumption.
