Framework for Print Advertising

Founded in 2021, the Syndicat des Régies Publishers (SRP) federates 20 ad sales networks from different press families such as magazine, national, regional and free daily press. On September 19, SRP launched a reference tool for calculating the carbon footprint of press advertising campaigns.

The aim of this unique reference framework is to standardize the methods used by publishers' advertising agencies and their partners, so that they can develop or adapt their own measurement tools.

This document is intended to complement the work carried out internally by advertising agencies, and to be consistent with the best pre-existing models of the carbon footprint of the press industry. As such, it provides a perimeter and calculation methodology that take into account the best practices shared by the industry.

It should be noted that this guide is based in particular on the recommendations of INTERGRAF, the European printing industry association, for measuring the footprint of advertising distribution for paper copies, as well as on those drawn up by the Syndicat des Régies Internet (SRI) and Alliance Digitale for measuring the impact of their digital versions (pdf).

Having anticipated the announcement and worked closely with the press industry, in particular at our workshop on Eco-tips for the Press, our measurement is 99% compatible with this standard.

It will enable us to update certain elements that we didn't necessarily take into account. For example, printing services: offset plate production, emissions linked to the printing phase, emissions linked to the bindery and router. Or the production of packaging, or the inclusion of the weight of pallets in transport (2.5% more than the weight of paper).

We would like to thank SRP for this titanic task. It is the starting point for the harmonization of carbon measurement in the press and the recognition of the commitments made over the years in the sector in favor of the environment.
